Signing in and out

How to sign in, what to do if it does not work, and signing out.

Signing in

  1. Go to the sign-in page.
  2. Enter your work email address and your password.
  3. Select Sign in.

If you belong to one organisation it opens straight away. If you belong to several, choose one. See Switching between organisations.

Your browser or password manager can fill in your details, and you can paste them.

If you cannot sign in

  • "The email address or password is not right": check both and try again. For your security, we never say which of the two was wrong.
  • "You need to confirm your email address": open the link in the email we sent when you signed up, or select Send a new confirmation link. See Creating an organisation.
  • Too many attempts: after several attempts in a short time, sign-in pauses for a minute. Wait, then try again.

Forgotten your password

  1. On the sign-in page, select Forgot your password?
  2. Enter the email address you sign in with and select Email me a link. You see the same answer whatever address you enter, so nobody can use the page to find out who has an account.
  3. Open the link in the email within an hour. Each link works once, and asking again replaces it.
  4. Type your new password twice and select Save my new password, then sign in with it.

You get an email to say your password was changed. If you didn't change it, reset it straight away and tell your administrator.

If signing in is paused

After several wrong passwords, signing in to your account is paused for 15 minutes, and you get an email to say so. Each further pause is longer, up to a day. The sign-in page says the same as for any wrong password, so it gives nothing away. To sign in sooner, reset your password, which also lifts the pause.

Two-step sign-in

Two-step sign-in asks for a code from an authenticator app on your phone after your password, so a stolen password is not enough.

  1. Open the account menu and select Two-step sign-in.
  2. Install an authenticator app, such as Microsoft Authenticator or Google Authenticator, and scan the QR code. If you cannot scan it, type in the key shown under it instead.
  3. Enter the 6-digit code the app shows and select Turn on.
  4. Keep the recovery codes somewhere safe, such as a password manager. They are shown only once. Each one signs you in once if you don't have your phone.

From then on, after your password, enter the newest code from the app. Codes change every 30 seconds and each works once. On the same page you can get new recovery codes or turn two-step sign-in off; both need a current code. You get an email whenever it is turned on or off.

Your organisation can require two-step sign-in. If it does, you are asked to turn it on before the organisation opens.

Signing in with Microsoft

If your organisation has set it up, you can sign in with your Microsoft work account instead of a password.

  1. On the sign-in page, select Sign in with Microsoft.
  2. Enter your work email address and select Continue to Microsoft.
  3. Sign in at Microsoft as you normally do. You come straight back into your organisation.

If you are told your organisation signs in with Microsoft, not with a password, your organisation requires Microsoft sign-in: use Sign in with Microsoft. If you were invited, select Join with Microsoft on the invitation.

If the page says Microsoft sign-in is not set up for your address, sign in with your password or ask your administrator. Your organisation's two-step code is not asked for: Microsoft applies your organisation's own multi-factor checks instead.

Signing out

Open the account menu at the top right and select Sign out. On a shared computer, always sign out when you finish.

Staying secure

  • Use a password of at least 12 characters. A few unrelated words make a strong password that is easy to remember.
  • Never share your password. Administrators never need to know it.
